The walled city of La Alhambra was the last Nasrid stronghold of the Muslim kingdom of Spain. Within its walls are the Palace and Gardens of the Generalife and Alcazaba, the Albayzin military tower, the Palace of Carlos V, Halls of Lions and the Sultana and the Alhambra itself, where the sultan received his throne in the throne room subjects and emissaries. The origin of this fantastic Nasrid palace, one of the greatest masterpieces of Arab art worldwide, dates back to a simple fortress erected in the 9th century and called 'AlHamra', "the Red", for the color of the earth that had been used in its construction.
