Should we give up flying for the climate? ✈🌏♻️ On my sustainable journey, flying has never been much of a concern for me. I don't do it regularly, I don't travel that much or go on holiday 3 or 4 times a year and I've never had to travel for a job. However this is changing this year. I am going out to Australia and New Zealand to visit a friend and will be doing some travelling whilst we are out there. Collectively, I will be taking about 10 flights, which is more than the total number of flights I have taken in 6 years! This is something I have been struggling with since I booked my first flight, knowing how much my carbon footprint will increase and the amount of emissions I will be producing. Climate guilt and anxiety is real and is more relevant than ever in relation to flying. Are we willing to give up flights to exotic places, are we willing to give up the convenience of flying to get from A to B and are we willing to pay more for the more climate-friendly transport options? The answer is for a lot of people probably not, but trying to make a more conscious effort I believe will definitely go a long way. I know I will probably never make this journey to the other side of the world again. Although I can't ignore the reality that my flight from Glasgow to Melbourne will produce 2.5tonnes of CO2 alone. As the saying goes, business as usual cannot continue and I think the pressure will increase in the coming months and years to make the sacrifice of not flying anymore for the sake of the climate.
BBC Future published an article today on this topic and I would recommend to give it a read if you are interested.
