When i was a kid, going to the seaside on Sundays, driving on the road along the flat Apulian country side to Gargano, we always met a grain silos, a small white tower with a window on the top, and my father invariably told us children: Look! see if you spot Rapolina up there! It was an affectionate reference to the Grimms' fairy tale “Rapunzel”, and each and every time my father’s words aroused enchantment and many thoughts, i’m sure in all of us three kids. Today i saw this basket at the farmers’ market, and there it was rapunzel along with many wild herbs, an announcement of the forthcoming Spring. It was like sitting on the back of the car, with the windows open, air on my face and a gasp of the heart, dreaming of that room up there at the top of the tower, firmly believing the possibility of launching the long braid - holder of stubborn dreams. In those childhood years i wore my hair short (it was only later that i started to wear them very long) but at the sound of my father’s beautiful and suddenly cheerful voice, i had no doubts that Rapolina was me . . Quando ero piccola, ogni volta che la domenica andavamo al mare, sulla strada del Tavoliere verso il Gargano, incontravamo un silos, una piccola torretta bianca con una finestrella in cima, e mio padre immancabilmente diceva a noi bambini: guardate, guardate se vedete Rapolina! Era un riferimento affettuoso alla favola Raperonzolo dei fratelli Grimm, e ogni volta quelle sue parole suscitavano incanto e molti pensieri, sono certa in ognuno di noi tre. Oggi ho visto questa cesta al mercato, e molti raperonzoli sui banchi, ad annunciare la vicina primavera. È stato come ritrovarsi seduta sui sedili posteriori dell’auto, con i finestrini aperti, l’aria sul viso e un sussulto del cuore, sognare la stanza lassù in cima alla torre, credere fermamente alla possibilità di lanciare quella lunga treccia a sostegno di sogni tenaci. E portavo i capelli corti da bambina (solo più tardi sono stati sempre molto lunghi), ma al suono della bella voce improvvisamente allegra di mio padre, non avevo dubbio che Rapolina, Rapolina ero io.

Homemade Mayonnaise is really all about the flavour! When I first tried Nik’s homemade mayo I was hooked. INGREDIENTS 1 large egg 2 T of lemon juice 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard ¼ teaspoon of kosher salt 1 cup of vegetable oil Optional: 1 T capers, chopped 1 T of fresh herbs, chopped INSTRUCTIONS 1) Place egg, lemon juice, mustard and kosher salt into a bowl or, the canister of a food processor. 2) With the machine or mixer running on medium speed, slowly drizzle the oil in to create a light, fluffy condiment. 3) Transfer to a bowl. Stir in optional capers and fresh herbs. It time to show our love to an often overlooked winter farmers market staple, the sturdy (and you might say studly) cabbage.  Even during the coldest months, cabbage makes a strong showing in a winter farmers market. While it is often overlooked, this versatile vegetable is packed with valuable vitamins and minerals and can sub into so many dishes depending on your mood (or desire). We shred red cabbage and enjoy raw in a salad with a light white vinegar vinaigrette, chopped parsley and roasted walnuts.  Other times, we shred red and/or white cabbage and toss into a quick stir fry. (We add walnuts to that, too.) Even if we don't use our cabbage right away, it stays reliably sturdy and fresh in the fridge until you decide to show it some well deserved attention.  Sturdy, reliable and there when you need it, what more can you ask for?
