Ashington House, Noel Moffett & Associates (namely architect Alina Zofia Bolesławicz-Moffett, his wife), Bethnal Green, London 1971. Unlisted.
Low cost, high-density, public housing was very much in demand in 60s London. Ashington House, located on the Collingwood Estate, presents one of the most creative solutions. The highly idiosyncratic, asymmetrical design and layout of stacked, interlinking flats and maisonettes at varying floor levels make this six-storey truly exceptional, even among its already very expressive brutalist fellows. According to Noel Moffett, his signature hexagonal modular plan was inspired by the Giants Causeway. But the repercussions of the Dutch and German brick expressionists are very present, too.
